Introduction

Pledge-taking (TA’AT SETIA) (yes, SETIA not SEDIA) and saluting (HORMAT KE HADAPAN, HORMAT) are both essential drills to learn.

These drills are quite simple, and timing for both of them are check-up.

Pledge-taking (TA’AT SETIA)

This is dead simple: on up, you raise your hand sharply to over your heart, with your hand in a fist and the thumb tucked into the fist. Done.

Saluting (HORMAT KE HADAPAN, HORMAT)

Another drill that is very simple. On up, you raise your hand sharply up to just a bit lower than your eyebrow. If you’re wearing glasses, it should go up to around your glasses’ frame. Your hand should be tilted forward at around 30°, and your hand should look like this (it’s a bit crude but you get the idea):

Make sure you tuck your thumb under your palm when saluting, and that your fingers are joined, as in the diagram.

Can I put down my hand?

Of course! To put down your hand, the command is SEDIA, and the timing is check-down. On down, you, well, bring down your hand sharply back to your SEDIA position. This applies to both pledge-taking and saluting.

Conclusion

Simple drills, which involve moving your hand up into either a fist or a palm with fingers joined.
