Background
You may have seen initial prototypes of comments here on the site, where I was experimenting with different ways to allow you, dear reader, to interact on posts. After some testing of different approaches, I finally settled on one.
Introducing - the new comments system!
Because of the many methods I tried which had 3rd-party software, I was apprehensive at storing the site’s comments. Hence, I developed my own system, with absolutely no tracking.
I would like to emphasise the part on tracking your data - I respect your privacy. The comments system stores no data except your display name (which you enter yourself into the textbox). I don’t use authentication, so I won’t take your email address, your location, or any of those things. All the data that is stored is visible by you.
You can see the system in action in any post on the site (including this one!) If you have any feedback, please post them below.
Development
I made most of the system, including the logic and storage. ChatGPT (our good friend) helped with minor tweaks and styling.
Limitations
- The comments don’t have a ‘reply to’ function. Yet. I may develop this down the road.
- Comments have a delay of about 2-3 seconds before showing up. Please be patient!
- The timestamps are not accurate. This one’s got me scratching my head.
